Banchory’s Robbie Simpson was beaten into second position by fellow mountain-running international Murray Strain in the senior men’s race at the East of Scotland cross-country championships at Cupar last weekend.

Strain, a member of the Hunters Bog Trotters club, successfully defended the title he won in Aberdeen last year when completing the 9.4km course in 33 minutes 27 seconds.

Simpson became the first member of Deeside Runners to win an individual district medal in the senior championship when finishing 10 seconds behind.

Former Aberdeen runner Robert Russell led Central AC to the team title when finishing in third position while Mark Haskett was the leading Aberdeen AAC runner, finishing 28th from a field of 216.

Robert Gordon University student Scout Adkin was third in the under-20 women’s race which was won by Rachael Dunn (Edinburgh AC).
