Murchie finishes sixth in gruelling beach event
Westhill triathlete produced a solid performance to finish sixth at the Gullane Standard on the East coast of Scotland last week.
The weather held up pretty well for the event which featured a 1500m swim in Gullane Bay.
The cycle section was reduced from 42k to about 35k due to roadworks before the run over undulations, hills, sand dunes and grass.
Lewis was second out of the water and third off the bike but was unable to hold off a runners behind and eventually finished sixth overall in 2.11.33.
Lewis said: “Gullane was a genuinely tough race and because of that, overall I’m quite pleased with the result in the end.
“The open water swim was long and seemed further than 1500m, as indicated by the times. Second out of the water was fair enough and the cycle, although shortened due to roadworks, included plenty of corners and junctions on what was generally a good smooth surface. I knew Scott Neyedli would gun me down at some point on the cycle but managed to hold on to third spot at that stage. I found the run course a real challenge and went through the pain barrier a couple of times. I tried everything to hold on to third but just slipped away towards the end of the run.
“However sixth overall in this field and on this course is still good progress. I’ll take on the Westhill Sprint in two weeks, prior to the Strathclyde Standard at the beginning of September, all geared towards preparation for New Zealand in October.”
