Musk get their season under way

Monymusk AFC got their build-up to the new season under way by taking on a team of Monymusk Legends at Deer Park on Saturday before a big crowd of supporters.

The opposition, made up of former players of the club, put up a spirited performance and, in a very competitive match, earned a share of the spoils after 90 minutes. A penalty shoot-out was then held to decide the winners with Monymusk proving more accurate with their spot kicks.

The legends took a shock lead after only three minutes with Doug Halliday finishing well. The Legends were unlucky not to increase their lead soon after when a shot cannoned down off the crossbar but referee Tom Fraser ruled it had not crossed the line with the Legends protesting the decision.

Monymusk drew level after 36 minutes through Liam Beaton and then took the lead just before half-time later when they were awarded a penalty and lively trialist Alan Findlater gave Legends keeper Graeme Smart no chance with the spot kick.

The Legends were awarded a spot kick themselves in 53 minutes and Steve McCaig converted to level the score at 2-2.

It was Findlater at the double in 66 minutes to put Monymusk in front again but all credit to the Legends they stuck at it and came up with an equaliser through Peter Craig with 10 minutes remaining. Penalty scorers for Monymusk were Liam Beaton, Alan Findlater, James Stewart and Ryan Sangster.

A barbecue was held after the game to round off a successful event and it is hoped that this can now become an annual fixture.

Monymusk’s hectic schedule of pre-season games continue with them due to face Highland League side Inverurie Loco Works at Harlaw Park this Friday (July 6) in a testimonial game for long-serving player Graeme “Taz” Smart. Kick-off is at 7.45pm with entrance £2.
