Rhona wins cross-country series

BANCHORY Stonehaven Athletic Club athletes were once again to the fore in the last event of the Round the Castles Cross Country Series at House of Dun near Montrose on Sunday.

Scottish under-17 champion Rhona Auckland continued her tremendous form by winning the U-17 women's age group.

Rhona sped round the three-mile course in 19 minutes 13 seconds to finish 44 seconds ahead of Ellie Buchan of Aberdeen AAC to win the series overall.

In the women's section Aboyne based runner Megan Albon also came home first in her race, four seconds ahead of an Aberdeen competitor.

In the under-15 girls section Lyndsey Young just missed out on first place when she finished a close second to G Black of Dundee, the overall winner of the series.

The men's section was once again dominated by Great Britain mountain running international Robbie Simpson who showed his class to win his race and also the overall series.

Simpson had won the two earlier rounds at Crathes and Haddo House and completed the six-mile course in 32 minutes.

In the veteran men's section BSAC coach Alan Sealy romped home in first place to also win the series overall.

In the under-15 boys section Michael Ferguson from Stonehaven sped away strongly to win his race comfortably by 49 seconds and in doing so clinched first place overall in the series.

In the under-13 boys section Ewan McMillan and Daniel Rees have had a tremendous tussle throughout the series and it all came down to the last race.

Ewan came out on top on this occasion, winning by 17 seconds, and in doing so claimed the overall series win in one of the closest sections.
