Second place for Banchory Stonehaven quartet

MEMBERS of the Banchory Stonehaven team had a successful weekend in Fife.

Four boys from the team travelled to Pitreavie on Saturday for the Scottish Athletic under-13 boys super-team competition. The group repeated last year's outcome, finishing runners up to Inverness.

The boys from 2009, Matthew Duguid and Euan Christie, alongside Stonehaven's Hayden Burgoyne and Kieran Strachan from Finzean, completed shot put, long jump, 200 metres and the relay.

After the first round of events Banchory Stonehaven were lying in fifth, but thereafter they pulled up to second position and went into the final relay event knowing they had to beat Inverness to win the gold medal. Although they were pipped at the post by the northern team they can be proud of achieving second place in a national competition.

Also at Pitreavie, Ellie Workman added to her medal haul when she won gold at the Scottish unde- 20 combined events. Lying second after the first round events on a wet and cold Saturday Ellie powered her way to first place on Sunday to win the gold medal.

Clubmate Rhona Auckland was also competing at the same venue on Sunday in the 3,000 metre under-20 championships. The Torphins girl came in second to win the silver medal closely behind the number one in Scotland, Sarah Ingles - a result which keeps Rhona in third position for her age group.

In other news, sprinter Kathryn Christie has been selected to run for Scotland at the under-17 track and field schools international at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow on Saturday. Kathryn will run in the 4 x 100m relay against teams from England, Ireland and Wales.
