Team spirit delights Culter boss

CULTER co-boss Andy Gibson was delighted with the character his side displayed to knock Downfield out of the GA Engineering Inter Regional Cup on penalties at the weekend.

The Deesiders came from 2-0 down to lead the tie 3-2 but the Dundee side equalised in the last minute to force a penalty shoot-out.

However Culter scored all five of their penalties to earn their place in the third round of the competition.

Gibson said: "It was a cracking game considering we hadn't played for so long. We did well to get it back to two each and we were dominating when Chris Ogboke put us 3-2 up.

"In the last ten minutes they started launching everything into the box and scored right at the death.

I was really pleased that we scored all five of our penalties. The commitment and spirit that the lads showed was excellent and we played a lot of good football during the match."

Gibson said he was pleased to get back playing again after a succession of postponements that have left Culter with a massive fixture backlog.

He said: "We started slowly against Downfield but I think that was down to rustiness with not having played for so long. We have been training on an artificial surface and the pitch was quite heavy on Saturday so it took a bit of getting used to for the players.

"It is a concern that we have only played ten league games so far but we will just have to deal with that."

Gibson was also happy to see his side score three times following the departure of striker Chris Mountford to Deveronvale.

He added: "Chris will be a loss but it was his chance to go and play Highland League and we didn't want to stand in his way. We got money out of the deal as well. We would have lost him for nothing in the summer so it made sense to let him go.

"Chris said he wanted to go and we wish him all the best. But we have other boys who can score goals as Chris Ogboke and Dod McBain showed on Saturday."

The Deesiders face Ellon United in the second round of the North Regional Cup at Crombie Park on Saturday. The match starts at 2.15pm.
