Top cyclists in action!
THE cream of Scottish cycling gathers in Aberdeenshire this weekend as local club Deeside Thistle hosts round five of the Scottish Power Renewables Super 6 road race series.
Westhill's Westdyke Leisure Centre will be race headquarters for 160 riders from across Scotland who will contest two races - the main 66-mile A Race and a 40-mile support race on Saturday (July 4). Both will be held on the open roads of Deeside and Donside.
The Super 6 is the premier Scottish cycling road race series that has individual rounds held around the country from March to September. Points are awarded to the leading riders and the winner is the rider who finishes with most points.
The series is currently led by James McCallum, from the Endura Racing Team. Alister Watt, of Aberdeen's Granite City RT-Ledingham Chalmers, will be looking to defend his leader's jersey in the veteran's category.
Promoting club Deeside Thistle has a number of riders taking part in the A and B Races and will be noticeable in the bunch in both races.
The main race takes place on a rolling circuit out towards Alford on A944 and will cover two laps of a circuit through Tough, Muir of Fowlis, Craigievar, Crossroads, Learney and Ordhead before returning for a finishing lap on the support race circuit for a total distance of 66 miles.
The main race will attract the top road teams in Scotland who are contesting the season long series. A good place to watch the main race is at the Lumphanan Crossroads Hotel turn at the top of the Craigievar climb (jct A980/B9119) at 11.30am and 12.20pm and then back on the finishing circuit at Echt or Garlogie from 12.50pm.
The support race is scheduled to depart the HQ at 10.35am and racing will start at Skene Smiddy on the A944. The race will cover four laps of a 10-mile circuit through Dunecht, Echt, Garlogie and back to Skene Smiddy. The finish will be on Garlogie/Skene road, known locally as Sheety Brae around noon.
The riders will contest a mid-race sprint competition through the finish on laps one and three and a King of the Mountains competition on laps two and three at the top of the climb out of Dunecht. The support race is expected to be a fast and furious affair with a number of local riders looking to show the visitors to the area a clean pair of wheels.
The racing starts at 10.30am and road users may experience a bit of slow traffic during the morning. However, all races are likely to be completed by 1.30pm.
