U18s struggle after long lay-off

LIne out action from the Deeside U18s match

Deeside U18s travelled to Perth for their first match of the year and the rustiness showed, with Perthshire running out winners by 30 points to 5.

This match was lost through errors and but for the sort of mistakes that are eliminated by regular game time and training, could have been a close contest.

Indeed, the second half ended one try apiece, showing that Deeside had the ability to match a strong Perthshire side.

Deeside’s try was scored by Calum Gordon, who cut back and round the defence and burst through several attempted tackles to score a fine try in the corner.

Throughout, Calum had carried the ball powerfully, but slow service had given him and centre partner Sam Morris little room to work in.

Both kept trying to break free and to recycle possession.

On the left wing, Lewis Reid was alert to danger and his defensive work was important.

The pick of the backs, though, was Joe Grimble at scrum half with sniping breaks, solid defence and good passing.

The Deeside pack held their own in the tight and in the loose Tom Christie was particularly impressive, tackling, stealing possession and making breaks.

The front row of Melvin McAskill, Angus Hart and Angus Wallace all drove forward with purpose with Melvin McAskill making a clean break on one occasion, perhaps surprising himself as much as the opposition.

However, to win such games, individual performances are not enough and teamwork is called for and this must be developed through training together.
