We got what we deserved!

CULTER co-boss Andy Gibson admitted his side deserved to get knocked out of the North Regional Cup after a poor second half display.

The Deesiders squandered a one-goal lead to exit the competition to Ellon United after a 2-1 reverse.

Gibson said: "It was a bad result as we didn't play very well. We made a decent start and went 1-0 up through Richard Wyness but we gave away a sloppy goal right before the break.

"We just didn't play at all in the second half and I thought Ellon probably deserved their win."

The Crombie Park side will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they face league leaders Sunnybank on Saturday.

Gibson admitted the surprise cup exit may be a blessing in disguise as his side try to catch up with their Superleague fixture backlog.

He said: "We are still in two cups and we have 16 games left in the league. It is now a case of trying to get as many points from the remaining games as possible and go as far as we can in the cups.

"It is a big game for us on Saturday against Sunnybank and a game that we know we need to win. I think everyone in the league accepts that Sunnybank are the best team at the moment but no side is unbeatable."

Gibson will be hoping key player Allan Youngson will have recovered from the ankle injury that saw him miss the 2-1 defeat to Ellon.

He said: "Allan said his ankle was feeling better so hopefully he will be fit enough to play on Saturday. He has been with Peterhead, Inverurie Locos and full time at Dundee in the past. He also had a brief spell down at Chelsea. He is a very talented player so you are always going to miss somebody of that quality.

"Saturday proved that you need somebody to get on the ball and give you that little bit of creativity to break teams down."

Gibson is also hoping to have resigned Dave Calder on loan from Elgin City by the weekend. The central midfielder previously played for Culter from 2004 to 2007.

The Culter co-boss added: "We couldn't get the paperwork completed in time for Dave to play against Ellon but hopefully he will be signed in time for the match on Saturday. He is on the fringe of things at Elgin so he is happy to come here and get some playing time and we will be delighted if we get him on board for Sunnybank this weekend."

Culter's match with Sunnybank kicks off at Crombie Park, Peterculter at 2.30pm on Saturday.
