Westdyke through in cup

THE heroics of Insch goalkeeper Errol Watson could not prevent Westdyke reaching the fourth round of the North of Scotland Cup with a 3-0 win.

Both teams had to travel to Inverdee after Insch were forced to give up ground rights due to an unplayable pitch after the fixture had been postponed for the past two weeks.

The ground staff at Inverdee had worked wonders during the week to get the pitches there playable.

Westdyke started with a run down the left and Insch keeper Errol Watson had to look sharp to save from Taylor.

From an Insch free kick in the fifth minute the ball was sent to the far post where Jaffrey slid in and made contact but the ball hit the outside of the post and went out of play.

In 15 minutes a Westdyke move involving Bain, Stevenson and McKenzie ended with Ian Mckenzie driving the ball into the net from close range.

Westdyke continued to push forward but could not add to the score before half time.

In the second period Insch's keeper Watson made save after save to keep his team in the game. Westdyke's McKenzie was causing havoc on the right wing, crossing the ball into his strikers who could not beat man of the match Errol Watson in the Insch goal.

Westdyke's Doig should have scored after 63 minutes but keeper Watson made yet another great save.

Halfway through the half Westdyke were awarded a disputed penalty which Ian McKenzie converted to double his side's advantage.

The away side finally sealed the game in 89 minutes when Andrew Connon managed to beat keeper Watson from four yards to ensure Westdyke's place in the fourth round of the cup.
