Alford Community Campus was officially opened yesterday by famous ex-pupil Emeli Sande, who performed alongside the school choir.
At the opening ceremony, Emeli unveiled a plaque alongside Aberdeenshire Provost Hamish Bernal, in front of an audience of pupils, councillors, and representatives from Morrison Construction.
School pupils gave a performance of ‘Music Through the Decades’, then Emeli performed her hit ‘Read All About it’, and then welcomed the school choir to accompany her singing ‘Next to Me’.
The singer said it was an honour to be welcomed back to the school and added that she thought the new facilities were amazing and would really encourage creativity.
Emeli also donated a baby grand piano to the school, and Alford Academy head teacher Moira Milne said the school was touched and that Christmas had come early for Alford.
Alford Community Campus opened to the public in October and so far over 3,000 residents have used the facilities, including a library, theatre, dance studio, sports halls, gym, community rooms and a swimming pool.
Provost Vernal said: “This is the latest campus to be unveiled in Aberdeenshire and brings education, leisure and cultural facilities together for the whole community to enjoy.
“I have been impressed with the standard of these facilities and I thank everyone involved in the project from development to delivery.”
The £37 million campus caters for all pupils in early years, primary and secondary education.
