The Westminster coalition appears to be unravelling in an attempt to win over undecided voters in the run up to the 2015 general election.
It’s been claimed that gaps have been ‘‘surgically opened’’ by spin doctors in both the Liberal Democrat and Conservative parties over the last two years and now West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine (WAK) has entered the fray.
Former Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader Tavish Scott claims that the Conservatives are on the retreat in Scotland following a ‘leaked’ Tory memo published last week, revealing that the party had dramatically scaled down its prospects to only two seats this side of the border.
Mr Scott said that the Conservatives’ ‘letter of surrender’ shows that “only Liberal Democrat MPs can stop the SNP gaining all seats in Scotland in a bid to secure independence by the back door,” despite the general consensus between political commentators being that the Liberal Democrats will be wiped out in Scotland come May owing to their complicity in austerity.
Mr Scott said: “In a leaked memo of seats which Conservatives had chosen not to target and which recently came to light, the Conservative retreat from Scotland was remarkable.
“Their revealing letter of surrender shows that even the Scottish Conservatives know they are not at the races in this election.
“Long held target seats of Gordon, Edinburgh West, West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, North East Fife and more have been ditched by the Conservative party, who have all but shut up shop and retreated to defend their single seat of Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale.
“Only the Conservatives could retreat to one seat.”
“The bookmakers have the Conservatives at odds of 100-1 and 50-1 in seats they used to hold in Ayrshire (North and Arran) and Gordon. That is how far they have fallen.
“Even their solo MP has the SNP breathing down his neck.”
Alexander Burnett, the Tory’s candidate for WAK, told the Piper: “The Scottish Conservatives are fighting West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine to win.
“We are out every day talking to people about the massive choice we’re facing at this election - between a Conservative government which will keep the economic recovery on track, or an Ed Miliband administration which will put all the gains we’ve won over the last few years at risk.
“The LibDems are trying to distract people in West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine from the extraordinary admission by Vince Cable this week that his party is now prepared to prop up Ed Miliband and the SNP in power. They’ve told people here they will keep the SNP out - but Mr Cable has now revealed that, privately, they’d hand the keys of Downing Street to Alex Salmond and Ed Miliband.
“We will be out every single day until May 7 to make sure that we keep on track, so that Aberdeenshire’s future if secured.”
