Alford boys played in the semi-final of the Under-15s Schools’ Basketball Cup against the powerful North Berwick on Tuesday, March 10.
The Alford Team lost 47-61 but the boys gave a brilliant performance and the spectators were on the edge of their seats.
The first quarter was slow to get going for both sides, but once the scoring started it was high scoring with the lead changing hands several times, ending 20-17 to North Berwick.
The second quarter was lower scoring, with both defences starting to get the measure of the opposition offence.
Alford had a brilliant quarter, allowing North Berwick only six points and went into half time ahead by one point 27-26.
The third quarter proved to be the turning point of the match with North Berwick’s Rory Milne proving inspired and unable to miss, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the quarter to give them a 10 point lead.
The Alford Team managed to hold their own in the fourth quarter but were unable to peg back the deficit.
An Alford Academy spokesperson said: ‘‘We are very proud of the boys for their huge achievement in reaching the semi-finals of a national competition.
“Not only have their performances been exceptional but they have also demonstrated a positive attitude, enthusiasm and commitment on and off the court. We would also like to thank their coach, Mr Wyllie, and the other parents who have supported the boys throughout the Cup.’’
