The Ythan APR took place on Sunday, March 22, in damp conditions but a strong field had assembled for this season opener.
With the various groups starting at different times based on ability, the race followed the pattern of 2014 as the early starters held off the chasing pack of established riders with Geoff Comley (Elgin CC) taking the win from Cairngorm CC duo Finlay Strivens and Noel Baxter.
First Ythan rider on the day was Alan Smith with 2014 winner Tom McCleman finishing 10th.
At Stirling, youth rider Fraser Gault continued a strong start to the season by winning the U12 Category at the Crit on the Campus in the grounds of Stirling University.
This result had followed good results in Edinburgh at Ingilston circuit earlier this month where he secured two second places along with a strong performance at the Bella Criterium at Bellahouston Park where he also claimed a further second place, a performance that showed he had the form to take the win the following day.
U16 rider Lewis Goodlad took 11th at the Bella Criterium in Glasgow on Saturday the 21st and 14th in Crit on Campus at Stirling University on Sunday the 22nd, with the Alford Academy pupil having led the pack for the entire 45 minutes race time.
Peterhead Academy pupil and Ythan Cycle Club rider Callum Cooper took part in the opening round of the Scottish Mountain Bike Cross Country Race Series at Cathkin Braes, Glasgow on Sunday the 22nd.
Riding the same demanding course as last year’s Commonwealth Games, Callum achieved a respectable sixth place in the Under 14 age category and is in a good position for the next round at Dalbeattie in this month.
Further afield, duathlete Karolyn Brown was on her travels again as she competed at Clumber Park Sprint Duathlon in Nottinghamshire.
Brown was again on top form as she claimed first place in her age group and sixth overall female from a field of 171. This result had followed a successful race at Rutland which had qualified her for the Standard Duathlon World Championships in Australia later this year while a win and second overall female at Oulton Park had secured a place at the 2016 European Championships.
Brown’s latest success was enough to guarantee her place at the 2015 Sprint Duathlon World and 2016 Sprint Duathlon European Championships.
