The Rotary Club of Aboyne & Upper Deeside supported Aboyne Academy in their third Young Musician of the Year Competition last week.
A large audience piled into the Deeside Community Theatre to enjoy a wonderful show of musical talent by the competitors.
The evening was coordinated by Rotarian Diane Fyffe and compered by Rotarian Reverend Frank Ribbons who introduced the eight junior and nine senior pupils who entertained the crowd to an eclectic mix of musical genres and instruments.
Academy music teachers Mrs Fiona Johnston, Mrs Linda Vickers and Mr David Cosgrove, presented students playing violin, piano, cello, saxophone, flute, guitar and vocal performance.
The judges, Miss Moira Ross, Mrs Angela Clark and Mrs Karen Cardy, had a difficult task choosing the winners from the high standard performances given throughout the evening.
Before a short refreshment break, the Academy Junior Choir entertained the audience and when all the competitors had played, one of last year’s winners, Ian Leahy and Alford Academy winner, Nathan Vickers, performed while the judges deliberated the results.
The winner of the junior section was Callum Geddes who played Spanish Dance No 5 (Andaluza) on piano and the runner-up was Osh Arthur who played Tarantella, also on piano. The senior section was won by Jessica McKay who sang “I Dreamed a Dream” and runner-up was Ellie McLaren on violin who played traditional Scottish music. Ellie was the junior runner-up in the 2014 competition.
Academy Rector, Raymond Jowett, gave a closing address commending all the competitors and thanking the Academy Staff and Rotarians who had made the evening such a success.
The proceeds from the evening will contribute to the Rotary Club’s sponsorship of Academy students for the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards residential summer camp. The camp will be held at Osh Arthur, Ellie McLaren, The Reverend Frank Ribbons, Jessica McKay and Callum Geddes. the Abernethy Outdoor Centre in July.
