A decision to appeal the rejection of a skatepark application has caused “great disappointment,’’ say Mid-Deeside Community Council.
As reported in last week’s Piper, the Aboyne Wheelers are appealing the Marr Area Committee’s decision to reject their proposal for the facility on Aboyne’s Green. Members on the committee voted five to two against the group’s proposal in July.
The Wheelers said that, since the decision, they looked at 19 alternative sites but found only the Green to be suitable. Now the community council have issued a statement opposing the plan.
It reads: “MDCC, on behalf of majority opinion, and the views of many local groups, cannot support this appeal.
‘‘The Wheelers accepted (the committee’s) decision and asked that they, various groups and the community should work together to find an alternative and more suitable site. The community council has to stand up for... groups who feel that this intrusion of an all-age sports facility will totally ruin this safe play area.”
The community council insist they will continue to support a facility in principle but not on the Green.
The decision to appeal has lead the community body Mid Deeside Limited (MDL) to not support the group in its application.
MDL backed the previous application, with MDL board member Cllr Peter Argyle siting out of the Marr Area Committee vote in July.
An MDL statement read: “The proposed site on the Aboyne Green has clearly divided the community, and coupled with the Aboyne Wheelers’ unilateral decision to appeal the decision without prior notice or discussion with MDL, has left us with little option but to withdraw all support for this application and the resulting appeal.”
